Calendar: It’s for the Kids… and Everybody Else

Victoria gears up to support kids and bring awareness to poverty, violence against women, AIDS and environmental issues. 

Ocean 98.5’s Radiothon for Kids  – Funds raised from the Ocean 98.5’s  Radiothon for Kids goes directly to the BC Children’s Hospital for urgently needed research, equipment, and education programs. THURSDAY & FRIDAY 6am-6pm. Science Enthusiasts & Challenge Competition – Watch as sixty Grades 6, 7, and 8 students converge on the UVic to compete for scientific glory! FRIDAY 9:30am-2:20pm in room 105, The Harry Hickman Building (UVic). Free. 250-472-4798.

Cracks in the Concrete – Workshops, discussions and strategizing that aims to inspire, strengthen and connect groups and individuals working on poverty issues. FRIDAY 6-10pm at St John the Divine (925 Balmoral), SATURDAY & SUNDAY 10am-6pm at the BCGEU (2994 Douglas). Free. 250-472-4386.

Canadian Diabetes Association – Regional annual meeting and presentation by Dr. Dorothy Williams, Brain Function and Diabetes: What is the Connection? SATURDAY 8:45am-12:15pm at the Mary Winspear Centre (2243 Beacon). Free. 250-382-5454 ext 222.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes – Men (and anyone else who wishes to participate) will literally walk one mile in women’s shoes to raise funds and awareness for the Victoria Women’s Sexual Assault Centre. 2-4pm at Centennial Square. Free to register or watch/donations appreciated.

Aids Candlelight Memorial – Honour and remember those whom we have lost to AIDS and to stand insupport of those in our community living with HIV/AIDS. SUNDAY 7:30pm on the front steps of the Legislature (501 Belleville). Free. 250-382-7927.

Victoria Women’s Newcomers’ Club – Join them for lunch, a presentation from the Centre of The Universe, Victoria’s very own Observatory, and the Victoria Women’s Newcomer’s Club AGM. 11:15am at the Cedar Hill Golf Club (1400 Derby).
