Catch The Most Serene Republic at Rifflandia, midnight Friday at Sugar

Been listening to The Most Serene Republic’s third full-length quite a bit lately and I’ve been impressed by how they’ve crunched a Phillip Glass sensibility into something of an indie rock framework with . . . And The Ever Expanding Universe. And the title of this disc certainly suits the Ontario crew’s ever-expanding and overtly cinematic sound—which seems overwhelmingly dense at first but, once the listener adjust, soon takes us on a sonic journey into the deepest parts of our minds . . . which may have something to do with the, uh, more compromised mental state in which I’ve been listening to this disc (seriously, this is a late-night, big-fatty-and-headphone album if I’ve ever heard one). Does it all hang together as one seamless package that leaves you feeling like you’ve found an essential piece to your life-long pursuit of that larger musical puzzle? Not necessarily, but Expanding Universe certainly lives up to repeat listenings. Yet another solid release from Canadian super-label Arts & Crafts, it should be fascinating to see if Serene Republic can pull it off live when they take the stage at Sugar come midnight Friday night.
